understand the importance of organized medicine.
When residents see themselves as stakeholders in
this College, they are more likely to remain engaged
throughout their careers. The future of emergency
medicine will be shaped by those who are willing
to step forward. Our role is to make that step
accessible, supported, and meaningful.
Returning to the idea of standing on the
shoulders of giants, it is worth reflecting on what
made those leaders “giants” in the first place. It
was not titles or recognition, it was action. It was
the willingness to engage with difficult problems,
to advocate when it was uncomfortable, and to
lead when it was necessary. They built something
enduring because they understood that progress
requires participation.
As I take on this role, I do so with respect for the
past, commitment to the present, and optimism
for the future. Together, we will continue the
work that has been entrusted to us. We will
advocate for our patients, support our colleagues,
and strengthen our specialty.
And when the time comes to pass this
responsibility to those who follow, I will do so
hoping that I have honored the legacy I inherited,
not only by preserving it, but by building upon it.
