As the summer months are upon us, I hope each of
you has the opportunity to enjoy time outside of
your important roles in the Emergency Department.
Whether you're taking a well-deserved vacation,
escaping for a weekend getaway, or simply
spending time by the pool with family and friends, I
hope this season brings you moments of relaxation,
joy, and lasting memories. During that time, rest
assured that PACEP remains hard at work for you.
PACEP Continues to Advocate for
Physician-Led EDs
A patient's zip code should never determine
whether they receive high-quality physician
care when they walk through the doors of an
Emergency Department. PACEP is committed
to advocating for patient access to high-quality
emergency medicine expertise. House Bill 2265,
introduced by Representative Paul Takac in
March 2026, would require that every hospital
emergency department in Pennsylvania be staffed
at all times by on-site emergency physicians. After
amendments, the bill passed the House Health
Committee and is now before the full House for
consideration. More recently, it has met resistance
driven by the interests of other state organizations
and their lobbying efforts. We quickly realized we
needed feedback from our patients across the
state on the issue.
Public Opinion Poll
To underscore the importance of physician-led EDs
for patients across our state, Susquehanna Polling
and Research, a nationally ranked polling agency,
conducted a scientific, bipartisan poll of voters
across all regions of Pennsylvania. The results
show overwhelming public support for physicians
remaining physically present in the Emergency
Department, along with a clear expectation
that remote telemedicine supervision of other
providers is inadequate. PACEP will use this data to
further strengthen the case for physician expertise
in EDs statewide.
